The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is aiming to enact the Occupational Safety and Health Act this year. “That’s a long outstanding matter that I have already taken up with the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs,” said Portfolio Minister, Hon. Karl Samuda, during the sitting of the Standing Finance Committee on March 3. The legislation aims to protect workers and other persons from harm to their safety, health and welfare through the elimination or minimisation of hazards, serious injury, or risks arising out of or in connection with activities at workplaces. Mr. Samuda informed that focus will also be placed on amending the Employment Agencies Regulation Act to give effect to the International Labour Conference Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. The Ministry will also seek to amend the Minimum Wage Act, National Minimum Wage Order and Employment Agencies Regulation Act to support compliance with the International Labour Convention concerning decent work for Domestic Workers (Convention 189).
